Myopia Testing Device ๐Ÿ‘“

As part of my Mechatronics Design (ME102B) Project @ UC Berkeley, my team designed a portable, low-cost myopia testing device, aimed towards increasing access to myopia management in developing countries.

I was in charge of choosing the electronics, planning the schematic, designing the state diagram and programming the firmware of the ESP32 powering the device.

Demo

When you first turn on the device, the device calibrates the position of the screen by โ€œzeroingโ€ it, coming to a stop when it hits the limit switch. At this point, it is ready to be used. The user will then place their eye they are testing behind the lens and using the rotary knob, they will adjust the distance between the lens and the screen until the image on the screen is sharpest.

The working principle behind this device is that by determining the distance between the lens and the image where it appears the sharpest, weโ€™re able to give a rough estimate of the diopter of the eye.
